 Why the European Certification?

Benefits

Reasons for a quality mark for fitness clubs

In recent years, fitness experts have worked hard to create standards reflecting common practice in the fitness industry. These standards include requirements for the safe and hygienic operation and supervision of fitness clubs. Originally, COVID-19 underscored the importance of visibly demonstrating compliance with such requirements to ensure the trust of customers, staff, suppliers, and governments. The FITcert® scheme has been developed so that clubs can independently demonstrate a high standard of customer service and provide a safe and suitable environment for their users.

How to get certified?

Would you like to have your fitness club certified? Then follow these steps:

  1. Familiarise Yourself with the Standard: Understand the requirements of EN 17229:2019 and the FITcert® certification scheme. Assess if your fitness club meets these requirements.
  2. Register for Certification: Organisations can register for FITcert® Level 1 and 2 self-assessment here.
  3. Contract with a Certifying Body: For FITcert® Level 3 and 4, sign a contract with a certifying body affiliated with NEN.
  4. Assessment and Inspection: The certifying body independently audits the fitness club or visits the site for an inspection (Level 4).
  5. Certification Issuance: The certificate is issued if the certifying institution concludes that the fitness club meets the requirements. It is valid for three years and is immediately included in the public register.
  6. Display Certification: Certified gyms can display the FITcert® logo and quality mark as proof of conformity. A QR code next to the quality mark allows checking the validity of the certification.

 Certification Scheme

The FITcert® certification scheme consists of four levels, allowing fitness facilities to progressively achieve the highest possible or desired standard.

Level 1 & 2

Preparation & Self- Assessment Phase

These levels represent the initial commitment to the programme, where preliminary checks and validation are performed. Entry into the programme begins at Level 1 & 2 combined, which is designed to be an accessible starting point.

Completion of Level 2 marks a transition point for successful clubs, guiding them towards the next steps. These steps are overseen by the Dutch Standardization Institute (NEN) and independent international certification bodies that comply with ISO 17020 requirements.

Level 3

Conformity Assessment

Here a club must provide information and evidence that they meet the core compliance requirements of the EN17229 standard. This is confirmed by independent certification organisations after detailed verification.

Level 4

European Certification

This is the 'gold standard' where, upon successful completion, clubs demonstrate 100% compliance with the requirements of EN17229. The full requirements for conformity assessment at Level 4 can be downloaded from NEN website.

AWARDING FITCERT® LEVEL 1 AND 2

Achievement of Level 2 is only valid for 12 months, after which clubs must progress to level 3 or 4 or their entry in the directory will expire.

Apply for FITcert® level 1 and 2 automatically. You can easily submit a request to automatically register using the form below.
